Computers had been continuously smaller and less expensive, but still could not be carried around. This generation is the generation of mobile computers- computers you can carry in you pocket and take with you wherever you go. During this generation, very small and inexpensive computer components arose.

IBM Simon- 1994
This was the first touchscreen, handheld phone/PDA, invented by IBM. It was the first piece of technology that allowed the user to make phone calls, email, access cellular pages, etc. It also had many features such as a calculater, calener, clock, and more. IBM, having no interface that used touchscreen at the time, made a new interface for the Simon called the Navigator.

Developed by Ericsson, this phone integrated touchscreen and physical buttons. It used a sophisticated operating system and had a black and white screen. Even with it's sophisticated operating system, however, users could not download 3rd party apps.

BlackBerry 5810- 2002
The BlackBerry 5810 was the first smartphone created by BlackBerry, and was the first phone to be optomized for taking in and recieving email. This caused BlackBerry phones to become more business-oriented.

The iPhone was a huge step in the smartphone industry. Created by Apple, this phone was the first to have a multi-touch interface. It ran Apple's iOS and was a fast phone compared to it's rivals. It was also able to download third-party apps, which could be coded and sold by regular people on the App Store. The phone also had it's own internet browser.

HTC Dream- 2008
This phone was the first to run the Android OS, which was similar to iOS in that it had 3rd party app support, an internet browser, etc., except that Android had much more customization and was able to do more than iOS, which was more "locked in".
